John Groberg was born in New York City in 1949 and graduated from the University of Virginia, where he studied history. From 1981 to 1986 he was an analyst at Atlantic Trust Company, a Wall Street investment firm, and from 1986 to 1989 he worked as a corporate officer and financial analyst in the private equity industry. In 1989 he moved to Atlanta and joined Piedmont Securities in the position of vice president. In 1994 he left the securities industry to pursue a career in higher education, joining Georgia State University in that capacity. In 2001 he returned to Georgia State as vice president for development and alumni relations. On January 10, 2017 John Groberg lost his battle with pancreatic cancer
